The World’s Largest Kidney Weighing 2.75kg Removed
Surgeons have removed the world’s largest kidney
weighing 2.75 kg from a 45-year-old patient at Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram
Hospital, India.
The
man, whose name is not disclosed, was admitted to hospital suffering
from severe pain in the abdomen, blood in urine and high fever. Due to
severe infection in the kidneys and excessive blood loss, the man’s
condition was deteriorating with every passing day. After several tests
the man was diagnosed with utosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease
(ADPKD).

Speaking about the operation Dr Manu Gupta, consultant, urological surgeon, said: “It
took us three hours of difficult dissection to remove the kidney that
weighed 2.75 kg—20 times more than normal—and was stuck to the
surrounding intestines. The second one, weighing 2.5 kg, was also
removed a week later. Altogether, the patient’s body was bearing an
extra weight of over 5 kg.”

The
patient has been recently put on dialysis, he is now recovering and
awaiting kidney transplant. ADPKD is an inherited genetic systemic
disease with 12.5 million cases worldwide. The 2.75 kg kidney smashed
the previous record of 2.15 kg, which was removed in Dhule, India, in
2011, according to Guinness World Records. Normal kidneys weigh
approximately 130 grams.
